Tampa, Florida– Police at the University of South Florida say a suspected peeping tom caught peering into windows at the Kappa Delta Sorority on campus is actually an absconded sexual predator wanted out of Illinois.
Officers say they spotted the man around 3:00am on May 6th creeping around in the dark, crouched down next to a window outside the sorority house off Maple Drive. When questioned, he told officers he was there to visit a friend, but could not provide the friend’s entire name and did not have any identification.
University Police say they later used finger prints to determine the man provided a false name and was actually 27-year old Jeremy Cary of Peoria, Illinois. State records show in 2010 Cary was convicted of aggravated sexual abuse involving a 13-year old victim. Records also indicate he failed to properly register as a sex offender and was listed as “location unknown” in the state’s database.
It’s unknown how or why he ended up in Florida, but he remains in custody at Hillsborough County’s Orient Road Jail on hold for the Marshal’s Office. He will likely be transported back to Illinois to face charges.
Students at USF say while they normally feel very safe on campus, the incident makes them reconsider their surroundings.
“Just knowing that, is going to make me personally a little more aware where I am and who’s around me,” said USF junior Tess Chase.
USF placed fliers up around campus to inform students of the incident in case anyone saw or came into contact with Cary while he was on campus.

The New Orleans police commander who until last week ran the city’s controversial red-light camera detail ignored police regulations and apparently tried to conceal his lead role in the operation, according to a draft report of an internal inspection of NOPD’s 8th District, obtained by the Times-Picayune.
