Defense bill nears passage in Congress

WASHINGTON (AP) — A massive defense bill is on the brink of final passage after the Obama administration and Congress resolved a fierce struggle over the president’s ability to prosecute terrorist suspects in the civilian justice system. The House voted 283-136 for the $662 billion measure Wednesday night, a rare bipartisan vote that reflected strong support for annual legislation that authorizes money for the men and women of the military as well as weapons systems and the millions of jobs they generate in lawmakers’ districts. The Senate was expected to clear the bill Thursday and send it to President Barack Obama. The House vote came just hours after the administration abandoned a veto threat over provisions dealing with the handling of terrorism suspects.

Key to announce Maori Party deal

Maori Party co-leaders keep their ministerial roles but will pick and choose the laws it will back the new National-led Government on.

Prime Minister John Key and Maori Party co-leaders Tariana Turia and Pita Sharples have today signed a confidence and supply deal as well as a new “relationship accord”.

The deal requires the Maori Party to support the Key-led Government on confidence and supply but not on any of the laws to be passed in National’s post-election action plan. That means the Maori Party will not have to vote for the partial asset sales plan.

Turia keeps her roles as minister for Whanau Ora, disability issues and associate minister of health. She also gains a new role as associate minister of housing.

Online tip solves hit and run

An emailed tip sent to the Rapid City Police Department has identified the suspected driver of a vehicle involved in a hit-and-run accident on Saturday.

The tip was sent to the department’s online anonymous tip system about 15 minutes after a request for help was made Tuesday.

“We want to thank the person who responded to our plea for help,” said police spokesperson Tarah Heupel.

The tip led police to a 17-year-old Box Elder male who confessed to hitting a Toyota Tacoma on Saturday at the intersection of Fairmont Boulevard and Fifth Street.

The youth is likely facing charges for failing to report an accident and running a red light, Heupel said.

Developer gets $2.4m in Sanger fraud case

A Fresno County jury has awarded $2.4 million to a Sanger developer after finding a former chief financial officer liable for fraud in connection with a string of real estate transactions and business deals involving the ex-wife of Sanger’s former city manager.

The developer, Mister C Investment Corp., sued former CFO Phillip Randy Castiglione and Laura Drinkhouse, the ex-wife of Sanger’s former city manager, Eugene “Jim” Drinkhouse.

The jury did not reach a verdict on claims against Laura Drinkhouse. Eugene Drinkhouse was not a defendant.

Wednesday’s verdict followed a three-week trial in Fresno County Superior Court.

The jury awarded Mister C $2.3 million in money damages, as well as $133,333 for property and $7,500 for cars.
