SEBRING, Florida – Dozens of parents have been found dead or dehydrated and starving at a central Florida home.

Jeff McLain of Orlando-based Parrots As Pets Rescue says he was contacted about the birds Monday by caretakers of a rental property in Sebring.

McLain says about two dozen parrots were found alive and about 50 were found dead.

McLain’s group and Florida Parrot Rescue took the living birds from a locked enclosure on the property, where they had been packed into insect-infested cages under a tarp.

Florida Parrot Rescue’s Jennifer James says the live birds were in the same cages as the carcasses.

A veterinarian is expected to visit the birds.

Highlands County authorities are searching for the woman who rented the property.
