The Gretna Police Department has released the name of the suspect it is seeking in Wednesday afternoon’s slaying on Huey P. Long Avenue.

He is Mekale Thompson, 19. Thompson is being sought on a second degree murder warrant in connection with the shooting death of Delast Francois, 23, in the 2100 block of Huey P. Long.

According to a Gretna Police press release, the two men got into an argument when Thompson left and returned with an assault weapon and shot Francois several times. Police were called at 2:24 p.m. Wednesday.

Police officers found an SKS assault rifle on the scene, the department said.

Police said Thompson should be considered dangerous.
