An emailed tip sent to the Rapid City Police Department has identified the suspected driver of a vehicle involved in a hit-and-run accident on Saturday.

The tip was sent to the department’s online anonymous tip system about 15 minutes after a request for help was made Tuesday.

“We want to thank the person who responded to our plea for help,” said police spokesperson Tarah Heupel.

The tip led police to a 17-year-old Box Elder male who confessed to hitting a Toyota Tacoma on Saturday at the intersection of Fairmont Boulevard and Fifth Street.

The youth is likely facing charges for failing to report an accident and running a red light, Heupel said.
