Two Fremont residents were identified today as possible burglary suspects killed Monday when their car crashed as they tried to outrun police, the second such incident in the East Bay in less than a week.

Wayne Dutra, 35, and Julie Frary, 36, died when the Chevrolet Monte Carlo being driven by Dutra ran a red light, crashed into a sport utility vehicle and plunged into a flood control canal, authorities said.

The incident began just before 1:30 p.m. when Dutra spotted Officer Jason Lambert and made several quick turns to get away, police said. The officer said the Chevrolet looked like a car seen leaving the scene of a house burglary earlier in the day, but lost it and was dispatched to another call, said police Officer John Flynn.

A few minutes later, Lambert came across a crash at Fremont Boulevard and Delaware Street that witnesses said had happened when the Chevrolet ran a red light and hit a Dodge Durango SUV. The Chevrolet came to rest in a drainage ditch, while the Dodge hit a Ford F-150 pickup truck, Flynn said.

Dutra and Frary, who was sitting in the back of the Chevrolet, died at the scene. Two other passengers in the Chevrolet were taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The driver of the Dodge suffered minor injuries to his arm. The driver and a passenger in the Ford were not hurt.

The crash happened five days after three burglary suspects trying to elude Newark police slammed into a 69-year-old Pleasanton man’s car, killing him and one of the suspects.
