Former U.S. Rep. Bob Etheridge starts out the Democratic primary with the lead in what looks like a wide open field, according to a new survey.

Etheridge has the support of 21 percent of North Carolina Democrats, followed by 13 percent who prefer state Sen. Dan Blue, 10 percent for Lt. Gov. Walter Dalton, 8 percent for U.S. Rep. Brad Miller, 7 percent for former state Treasurer Richard Moore, 6 percent for U.S. Rep. Mike McIntyre and 2 percent for state Rep. Bill Faison.

One-third of the Democrats are not sure, according to the survey taken by Public Policy Polling, a Democratic-leaning firm based in Raleigh. It was the first poll taken since Democratic Gov. Bev Perdue’s surprise announcement that she would not seek re-election.

Two Fremont residents were identified today as possible burglary suspects killed Monday when their car crashed as they tried to outrun police, the second such incident in the East Bay in less than a week.

Wayne Dutra, 35, and Julie Frary, 36, died when the Chevrolet Monte Carlo being driven by Dutra ran a red light, crashed into a sport utility vehicle and plunged into a flood control canal, authorities said.

The incident began just before 1:30 p.m. when Dutra spotted Officer Jason Lambert and made several quick turns to get away, police said.

Rep. Nancy Pelosi needs a gain of 25 House seats.

Pelosi, 71, needs a net gain of 25 Democrats nationwide, a goal she calls her “Drive for 25.” She has predicted gains as large as 35, produced in part by a Democratic romp through California, where the redrawing of legislative districts by a nonpartisan citizens commission promises the biggest shakeup in the state’s congressional delegation in two decades, along with gains in Texas, New York, Illinois and Florida.

Independent analysts said Pelosi is dreaming.

LAGUNA BEACH – A caller said an elderly man, who drives a black, older model car, tried to run him over on the 200 block Ocean Avenue, just like he did a few weeks ago. The call was reported at 3: 26 p.m. on Jan. 19.

Sunday

Harassment. 400 block South Coast Highway. A caller said a woman kept on unplugging hotel items and harassing other employees. 8:47 p.m.

Patrol check. A caller said a member of a neighbor’s spiritual sweat lodge urinated on his yard. 4:16 p.m.

Saturday

Vandalism. 2900 block Mountain View Drive. A caller said teenagers riding in a Ford Explorer, yanked a statue out of his front yard, dragging and leaving it to rest on the middle of the road. 8
