Seventeen people will face 180 drug charges after a major drug bust across the Wellington region this morning.
The 17 men, aged between 20 and 58, were arrested as police executed 25 search warrants across the Wellington area.
Officer in charge of the Covert Operations Group, Detective Inspector Darrin Thomson, said the 12 month-long undercover operation dubbed ‘Operation Hunter’ had “significantly disrupted the criminal fraternity and drug supply chain”.
About 150 officers carried out the warrants in Upper Hutt, Wellington, Masterton, Martinborough, Carterton and rural Wairarapa.
The New Orleans Police Department is investigating a fatal shooting of a man in Algiers Saturday night.
Police found a 30-year-old man shortly after 10:00 P.M. who was shot multiple times in the 3500 block of Meadow Park Lane, said NOPD spokeswoman Officer Hilal Williams. He was brought to the hospital, where he later died.
Police are withholding his name until they notify his family.
Homicide Detective Christopher Harris is in charge of the investigation.
LIBERTY TWP. — A standout area athlete is facing charges after a woman escaped injury early Thursday when two gunmen broke into her residence and demanded money, the Butler County Sheriff’s Office said.
Two men and the victim’s 16-year-old daughter set up the crime, investigators said. Ed C. Willis and Dan McElroy, both 21 and of Cincinnati, are charged with aggravated robbery and theft. The girl is charged with complicity. All of the charges are felonies and all three are in jail.
McElroy, a graduate of LaSalle High School, is a member the Bowling Green University men’s basketball team. At LaSalle, McElroy was named honorable mention all-state, according to Bowling Green’s website.

Chesapeake, VA — About 117,000 glass votive candle holders were voluntarily recalled by Dollar Tree Stores Inc., and the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission for fire and laceration hazards. The CPSC announced the product recall on July 5, 2011.
