It’s rare for any human endeavor to achieve perfection, but California’s High-Speed Rail Authority has done it albeit in reverse.

Every single independent review of its project to link the northern and southern halves of the state with a bullet train has concluded that it’s not working. No exceptions. Not even one.

The only ones saying that the bullet train will work as promised are the rail authority itself, its highly paid consultants and media cheerleaders, and those on the political left who hate cars and planes and love trains.

Four people have been arrested after a string of aggravated robberies over a two hour period in south Auckland overnight.

Detective Sergeant Tom Gollan said it was of great concern that the offenders were willing to use violence to obtain “petty” amounts of money and property.

The first incident happened outside Everglade Liquor Store in Manukau about 10pm.

Two teenagers armed with a BB gun allegedly tried to rob the store but were confronted by two workers outside.

There was a scuffle and one of the workers was hit several times over the head with the gun before the offenders fled empty-handed, police said.

An armed robbery was reported Monday at a Westlake Village jewelry store, authorities said.

Kirk Jewelers, 960 S. Westlake Blvd., was robbed about 1:15 p.m. by two men, sheriff’s Capt. Don Aguilar said. There were reports of injuries in the incident.

Sheriff’s deputies searched the area with the help of a helicopter and K-9 unit but did not find the robbers, who made off with jewelry, Aguilar said.

The robbery involved firearms, he said. The investigation was continuing this afternoon.

In a move that is sure to spark controversy, Rhode Island governor Lincoln Chafee signed into law a bill that makes it a crime for minors to send sexually explicit photos of themselves or, even more surprisingly, messages. For the person who receives the message, possession of child pornography charges. Both would have to register as sex offenders. The state’s attorney general even went so far as to ask parents to sign a pact with their children about what can and cannot be sent electronically.

So, while the intention to protect children is good, is this the way society should go about doing it? In my opinion, hardly. There are a lot of consequences to sexting in the first place.

First and foremost should be the notion that, once the picture has been sent, there is no controlling where it goes.
